September in the Pioneer Range
From high on Goat Peak, the slopes of Duncan Ridge on the left flow down towards Johnstone Peak, with Baldy behind, just above Pioneer Cabin. Then Handwerk Peak and finally Salzburger Spitzl on the right.
Shadows are lengthening as we make the basin. We sat here in the grass for a bit and pondered the landscape. It was a spectacular day.
The twin peaks of Handwerk are more rounded from this side.
Nearing the headwall we take a short break. The view out to the west is amazing.
Beautiful hiking in the upper reaches of the basin.
Johnstone Peak and Pioneer Cabin back beyond Terry.
As is my tradition, I shoot back towards Pioneer Cabin. The front door is open and later I watched somebody leave through binoculars.
A last look back at Pioneer Cabin. Notice the lengthening shadows. Time to head down. And yes, I think there's someone standing just left of the cabin.
Looking down towards Pioneer Cabin.
I recall a youth outing where we were headed for a lake I later named Desperation. I noticed it in this photo, but it's ice and snowcovered in the lower center of this shot.
Terry takes a look back.
Out to the west is Pioneer Cabin. See it? It's right in photo center...
And there. I came for a visit two weeks later and the snow was gone.
And panning further right is Point 9,669, the red mound just left of Pioneer Cabin, which is sitting in the snowbank just to the right of Point 9,669.
And then I decide to look for Pioneer Cabin. There it is! Still a bit of snow around it.
Pioneer Cabin is out there in the far distance.

I spy Pioneer Cabin. The Boulders lie out beyond. Only three months of snow-free at the cabin this year.
